High blood pressure, or hypertension, can often occur without noticeable symptoms, which is why it’s sometimes called the “silent killer.” Even if you feel fine, consistently high blood pressure can lead to serious health issues over time, including heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.

It’s essential to take any high blood pressure readings seriously. Here are some steps you can consider:

  1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your readings and any necessary tests or treatment.
  2. Monitor Your Blood Pressure: Keep track of your readings over a few days or weeks to see if it remains consistently high.
  3. Lifestyle Changes: Consider lifestyle modifications such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, reducing stress, limiting alcohol, and quitting smoking.
  4. Medication: If prescribed by a doctor, take whatever medication is suggested.
  5. Regular Check-Ups: Regular monitoring of your blood pressure can help catch any changes early.

“My blood pressure reads very high but I feel completely fine.”

“Should I still be worried?”

Let me break down the 5 major stages of high blood pressure and tell you when you should be worried

NORMAL BP (below 120/80)
If your reading is below 120/80 mmHg.
This is where it should be
Just keep maintaining a healthy habit.

ELEVATED BLOOD PRESSURE (120–129 / 80)
If you check your BP on different days and the upper number (systolic) falls between 120–129, you don’t have hypertension.
It is still normal, but I urge you to maintain a healthy lifestyle so it doesn’t go up.
Eat more of naturally made foods, exercise, and cut down on processed foods.

HYPERTENSION STAGE 1 (130–139 / 80–89)
If your BP falls within this range on different days, it is considered hypertension… but still at an early stage.
Most people don’t usually need medication at this stage, except they were previously hypertensive or there is another reason your doctor needs to prescribe it.
Eat less snacks , eat more fruits, exercise, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

HYPERTENSION STAGE 2 (140 / 90)
If your BP is above 140 but less than 180.
At this stage, you will likely need medication to control it because lifestyle changes may not be enough. You should be worried, even if you don’t feel any symptoms.
Please see a doctor.

HYPERTENSIVE CRISIS (above 180/120)
If your BP is above this, leave whatever you’re doing and go to the nearest hospital immediately. This is where you should be very worried.
Funny thing is that some people may not even feel any symptoms. Some people may feel completely fine, meanwhile their kidneys and other organs are being affected.

This stage is considered an emergency.

If you have any concerns or if your high blood pressure is accompanied by symptoms like headaches, chest pain, or shortness of breath, seek medical attention promptly.
